Erasmus accommodation in Vilnius: dorms, deposits and renting
The simplest and cheapest route for an Erasmus student is a university dormitory booked through your host university before you arrive. Private renting is possible but costs more and is best sorted once you're in Vilnius.
Start with your university dormitory
Every major Vilnius university offers dorm places to incoming exchange students, and these are the easiest option to organise from abroad. You apply online through the same international office that handles your nomination and Learning Agreement.
Two things matter most:
- Apply early. Registration usually opens around mid-June for the autumn semester and mid-December for spring. Rooms are allocated first-applied, first-reserved, so the cheapest places disappear quickly.
- Read the deposit rules. Some universities charge a small non-refundable reservation fee; others take a larger refundable damage deposit.

Typical dorm prices in Vilnius
Prices depend on the room type (triple, double, single) and whether it's renovated. The figures below are indicative examples from two universities (as of 2026 — confirm current rates on each university's page).
| University | Room type | Approx. €/month per person |
|---|---|---|
| VILNIUS TECH | Triple (standard) | €85 |
| VILNIUS TECH | Double (renovated) | €160 |
| VILNIUS TECH | Exchange-student dorm, double | €240–€280 |
| MRU | Triple room place | €110 |
| MRU | Double room place | €120–€135 |
| MRU | Single room | €230–€275 |
Deposits vary a lot: MRU uses a reservation fee of around €100, while VILNIUS TECH asks for a refundable damage deposit of around €600, often payable at a bank within the first few days after arrival. Always check what's refundable and when.
Triple rooms are the bargain
Renting privately
If dorms are full or you want more privacy, the private market is an option — just expect to pay more.
- A private room in a shared flat typically starts around €300/month, more in or near the Old Town.
- A studio costs considerably more, often €400+ depending on location.
- Neighbourhoods further from the centre (for example parts of Naujamiestis or areas near the Saulėtekis campus) tend to be cheaper.
Useful starting points are the Facebook groups Erasmus in Vilnius and Foreigners in Vilnius, plus student-rental platforms. Treat platform listings as a guide to prices, not a guarantee.
Don't pay before you can verify
Let your ESN buddy help
When you're nominated, ESN Vilnius (the Erasmus Student Network) usually assigns you a buddy — a local volunteer student who contacts you around a month before arrival. A buddy can meet you at the airport or station, help you move into your dorm, explain how things work, and even help you look for a private flat if you need one.
It's free, and it makes the first week far less stressful. If you haven't heard from a buddy, ask your international office or contact ESN Vilnius directly.
A quick plan
- Get nominated, then email your international office about dorm booking and deadlines.
- Apply for a dorm the moment registration opens (mid-June / mid-December).
- Pay the deposit or reservation fee and keep the receipt.
- If you'd rather rent, book short-term accommodation first and search on the ground.
- Connect with your ESN buddy for arrival help.
Frequently asked
Is a university dormitory cheaper than renting privately?+
Almost always. A dorm place in Vilnius typically runs €60–€280 a month, while a private room usually starts around €300 and a studio is far more. Dorms are the budget choice for one or two semesters.
When should I apply for a dorm?+
As soon as registration opens — usually around mid-June for the autumn semester and mid-December for spring. Rooms go on a first-applied, first-reserved basis and the cheapest ones fill fast.
Do I need to pay a deposit?+
Usually yes. It ranges from a small reservation fee (around €100 at MRU) to a larger refundable damage deposit (around €600 at VILNIUS TECH). Confirm the exact amount and refund rules with your university.
Can I arrange everything before I arrive?+
Yes for dorms — you book online through your host university. For private flats, never pay before viewing in person or via a trusted contact; arrange short-term accommodation first and search once you're in Vilnius.
Who can help me settle in?+
Your ESN buddy. They can meet you on arrival, help you move into the dorm, and assist with finding a flat if you need one.
